A yearly tradition of cleaning the Naugatuck River banks wasn't slowed down by the wet conditions Saturday, as community members joined forces with the city of Torrington, Trout Unlimited and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection. Since then, the numbers of volunteers have grown. "She does a lot of this sort of work when we're out enjoying these areas," Ms. "After storms like [Hurricane] Irene, there have been snags and build-ups along the river," Zoning and Inland Wetlands Officer Kim Barbieri said earlier this week. Barkhamsted residents Theresa and Aimee Gregg said they joined the community service project because they wanted to leave a lasting impact on the river's environment. "We've really combined forces," she said, "And that's helped a lot. The two picked trash and debris out of the mud, despite the rain Saturday. |
