| Exporting the UK's trade success across the globe
FOR centuries, our country has been building trading links with countries in all corners of the globe, developing a strong system of exporting goods and services. Now, companies who have demonstrated significant export success are invited to be recognised as part of the Mail's Business awards. Hull's Microgard was one of the world's first manufacturers of limited-life protective workwear. More than 35 years later, the company continues to be at the forefront of its industry, supplying innovative workwear to more than 50 countries throughout Europe, the Middle East, Asia, Australia, North and South America. He said: "We employ about 330 people, most of whom live in the locality. The Mail's awards have in previous years celebrated companies who have made waves in overseas market, however this year a new award has been devised that recognises companies that successfully export to other elements of the United Kingdom, as well as overseas. The Exporter of the Year Award, sponsored by Associated British Ports (ABP), is aimed at companies that have developed new markets outside of Hull and the East Riding - whether outside of the county or overseas - and which can demonstrate significant export sales in relation to the size of their organisation. "There are people who have a lot of pride in this business, and yet they are not often recognised locally. Today, exports from the United Kingdom are worth hundreds of billions of pounds every year and here in the Humber - the UK's busiest estuary and ports complex - exports form a significant part of many a company's business. Until recently, the company - which employs about 300 people at its base in Derringham Street - had not sold a single loaf from a British supermarket shelve for further than a decade. Jackson's Bakery has been crafting bread for further than 100 years and today exports its wares to more than 22 countries.
