Help clean up the Codorus in New Freedom

People who want to help clean up the Codorus Creek area in New Freedom should plan on getting dirty and wet.

"We want to improve the health of the stream for ecological health, which makes the water run clearer and be better for aquatic life," she said. The event will begin at the New Freedom Heritage Museum, 22 Railroad Ave.

The project is needed because storm runoff and increases in impervious surfaces - due to development and construction - has accelerated erosion of the stream banks and bed, Myers said.

At least 60 volunteers are required for the cleanup effort from 8 a. We're improving the aesthetics by removing non-native exotic plants and replacing them with native plants to improve the natural habitat of the stream.

Volunteers also will plant native sedge and grass seeds along the banks and the stream.

The cleanup effort also is the first step in the borough's park development project.

The erosion problem has been going on for years, she said.

"We're very excited to get things started," she said. We're very appreciative of all of the support we're getting from the community to do this project.

The Stream Team Committee has been working on the project for about three years, Peacock said. to 4 p. Saturday, April 14, beginning at the New Freedom Heritage Museum at 22 Railroad Ave.

Cleanup assignments include removing stream vegetation, trash and sediment, said Sue Myers, a Stream Team Committee leader.

The district has partnered with New Freedom Heritage to form the Stream Team Committee and lead the Stream Rehabilitation Project that involves cleaning up the creek area between Main and Franklin streets.
