Schools to switch janitorial service The DeWitt School District's often-troubled relationship with its custodial contractor, Janco Building Services, will be coming to an end this summer. Rader pointed out that GCA uses Green Seal Certified "biorenewable" products. Janco won the contract two years ago when the district first decided to bid out for janitorial services. The district's legal balance as of March 30 is $1,253,519. Wayman pointed out that this is significant because it means the district has "made up" for the lesser amount of declining enrollment funding it received this year. GCA's bid is also lower than the cost of doing the custodial work in-house. Facilities director Jeff Rader said GCA has received high marks from the Crossett, Blytheville and Forrest City districts. Wayman said no one is scheduled for non-renewal as of now. The Board voted to hire Deane McEuen as junior cheerleader sponsor and J. Also, the district received more than $48,000 in reimbursements for the food service program, decreasing its deficit to $15,000. During Janco's tenure, there have been many complaints from teachers, parents and Board members about the cleanliness of the school buildings. The breakdown by building is 483 at DeWitt Elementary School, 336 at middle school, 383 at the high school and 78 at Gillett Middle School. Gunnell as ISS (In-School Suspension) teacher with coaching duties. The Board also approved a number of personnel actions, including the resignations of teachers Sheila Noble, Sherry Lovett, Clara Ray, and Judy McSwain and secretary Louise Mannis. The bid was not the low bid; rather GCA was in the middle of the seven bids opened, but as Board member Johnny Lockley pointed out, "You get what you pay for. Those "glitches" were largely the result of poor management, Wayman said. Enrollment is staying "pretty level," Wayman reported. All classified personnel were rehired, except those who will receive a non-renewal letter by May 1. The Board approved requests from the Gillett Civic Group to use facilities on the Gillett campus for the annual Heritage Festival in May. |
