New cleaning firm starts work in Spring

The cleaning service recently hired by the Spring-Ford Area School District to replace the previously contracted Jani-King began working in some of the district's schools this week. "We're just hiring the cream of the crop. Cooper said Interstate's approach at keeping lines of communication open makes all the difference.

"What I see so far is going good," Cooper said, although he acknowledged it will take time to get a full assessment of the service's efforts. "There's two reasons why a company is more successful than another. Those that are hired by Interstate, whether they're formerly of Jani-King or not, will have their performance "closely monitor(ed)," according to Weller. "Really, (Jani-King) had some good people that were cleaning," but their management efforts were "lousy," Cooper said. The real benchmark for Interstate, Cooper said, will be September 15, after the summer cleaning is over and students have been in the schools for a few weeks for the 2012-13 school year. To keep everything running smoothly, Cooper thought the hand-over of the school should be postponed until after graduation. Jani-King is an international franchise and the Bucks County-based Interstate has made sure to distinguish itself as a local company.

Spring-Ford was not looking for another franchise cleaning service after its two-year contract with Jani-King ended by a mutual decision in May. Cooper said Interstate hadn't moved into Spring-Ford Area High School yet because of Thursday night's graduation, which would have complicated things.

Among those hired are a few former Jani-King employees, though Weller stressed that there aren't very many. He said he knew most of them and they did a good job.

Weller said he has goals for what his company can accomplish at Spring-Ford. One is supervision and the second is communication. " Cooper said he had no problem with the hiring of the former Jani-King custodians.
