REGINA - A group of volunteers chose to spend a beautiful Tuesday cleaning up Regina's North Central neighbourhood.

Sandy Wankel, executive director of NCFC, feels that, along with benefiting the community, volunteering in North Central can certainly help change people's perceptions.

For Tryane Bird, a North Central resident and volunteer, it shows that the neighbourhood continues to take positive steps.

"It's important to the community and it's a rewarding thing for the person as well," she said.

The Co-operators' Lyndsay Callander agreed.

"Our main focus is children and families in this area and when you have a cleaner environment and a safer place .

"One volunteer said she always hears so many bad stories from North Central and she said it's such a pleasure to come into this area and see what it's really like," Wankel said.

Volunteering in North Central, which is also to take place Wednesday, is the first in a number of events planned by both The Co-operators and Conexus, including park development in North Central and tree planting and cleanup in the Wascana area.

For the two Regina businesses, the volunteer initiative is part of the International Year of Co-operatives as designated by the United Nations.

"We're trying to strive to do good," Bird said. It's working alongside communities and listening to what the community needs are as well.

Wendy Koch from Conexus was one volunteer rolling up her sleeves and picking up some garbage.

"Here we are out on a beautiful day making a difference in the city of Regina," said Susan Zwarych, senior consultant of community investment with Conexus.

"When you talk about co-operatives, it's really means giving back to the community," said Glenn Bohay, manager of community relations with The Co-operators. ".

"Our department thought this would a great chance to team build together and work at cleaning up the area," she said.
