Graffiti clean up boost for Britain in Bloom bid
A PORTISHEAD businessman has offered to rid the town of unsightly graffiti - following an appeal for help in the Evening Post. Over the winter unsightly graffiti has been daubed on the electricity substation at Nore Road as well as the phone exchange box at Wyndham Way. Portishead in Bloom volunteers are delighted at the news the unsightly graffiti will be removed. Some of the areas are included as part of the route which judges take during their visit around the town for the contest. Mr Mott has recently completed a project, working in conjunction with Gordano Window Cleaning, to clean the BT building at Rivergate in Temple Meads, Bristol. But volunteers feared judges could strip them of valuable marks because of the increasing levels of graffiti, raising concerns the town could lose its gold medal award status. The Portishead in Bloom group works tirelessly throughout the year to make certain the town looks its best for the judging visit in July. Properties in the town centre, West Hill and at the Village Quarter development have also been targeted. He added: "Portishead is my home town and this is about doing something to help the local community. Former Gordano School pupil and dad of two, Mr Mott, said: "I saw the story in the Evening Post and thought I'd like to help. Chairman, Sandy Tebbutt, said: "It's fantastic that a local business has come forward and offered to help and we're very grateful to Mr Mott. Mr Mott, who is born and bred in Portishead, has now offered to spend his free time cleaning up the unsightly scrawls across the town. Another property to fall victim to the vandals is the former carpet shop at Cabstand in the centre of the town. "A good deal of work goes in by the Portishead in Bloom group to keep the town looking nice all year long and it would be a dreadful shame if Portishead lost its gold medal just as a result of graffiti. "As a voluntary group we have very limited funds and there's no way we could afford to pay for the graffiti to be cleaned off. |
