Kathleen Lynch did a double take when she saw Scott Quimby walking along Spring Street picking up trash. "It's amazing," Quimby said. Each time, he has walked a half mile of roadway, picking up cigarette butts, beer bottles and cans, fast food wrappers, styrofoam coffee cups and plastic bottles. He said he will continue to volunteer his time to clean up after litterbugs. "It would be nice to live in an area where it's completely clean," Quimby said. Lynch, a Girl Scout leader, said she will share Quimby's story with her troop to encourage others to keep the environment clean. Quimby said he took up his new trash-collecting hobby in February after noticing trash piling up near woods off Spring Street. "I couldn't believe the amount of trash that was out on the side of the road," the 36-year-old East Bridgewater resident said. "I said, 'When I have a day off, I'm just going to go out and clean it up. "He cared enough to do something about the litter," she said. It's important to get the word out there. I was just compelled to turn around and ask him what he was doing," Lynch said. She stopped her car and introduced herself to Quimby, snapped his photo and emailed The Enterprise about him to get the word out about his community service. During his first outing, Quimby said it took him five hours to fill 12 trash bags. During Presidents Day weekend, Quimby bought $30 worth of trash bags, a 5-gallon bucket and an "easy grabber" to pick up trash. |
