Osterman keeps cleaning after four decades

Osterman Cleaners has been in business in Deerfield for more than forty years, and though management has changed hands several times, manager Angela Kim said the facility has retained a good number of regular customers over her seven years there.

"We have a lot of regular customers," she said.

Deerfield resident Jennifer Frank said she has used Osterman for the last six years, and the business always finishes her dry cleaning on time.

Kim said the slow economy in recent years has affected business, but she added the effect was not as much as might be expected.

At the June 18 Village Board meeting, Osterman Cleaners was honored as one of several businesses that has operated in Deerfield to get more than 40 years.

Kim said it was great to be honored at the meeting, especially in the current environment when many businesses have difficulty staying open.

Osterman also cleans wedding dresses and comforters.

"We also clean leather and rugs, too," said Kim, explaining an Oriental rug is cleaned separately from other items.

"We put it in the machine by itself," she said.

"I come all the way from Lincolnshire," he said.

Kim said she and the owners researched neighborhoods when they came to the area.

Osterman continues to attract customers in an area with multiple dry-cleaning businesses.

"A lot of businesses come and go very easily," Kim said.

Kim said Osterman, which has a plant on the premises, offers a range of services including alterations, laundry and cleaning of household items such as mini-blinds, that are sent out to be cleaned.

Kim said during the week, Osterman is most busy during the early morning and after-work hours.

"Saturdays are the busiest days," she said.

Lincolnshire resident Howard Sokol said he likes getting his dry cleaning from Osterman because of its service and quality.

Although many customers come from Deerfield, Kim said Osterman also sees Highland Park, Bannockburn, Riverwoods and Northbrook residents walk through the doors.
